Welcome To The July/August Issue
Individuals are encouraged to be more proactive in detecting possible skin cancers. Skin cancer rates are increasing among minority groups in the United States. This issue discusses a common misperception that that people with darker skin do not get skin cancer.
You also will read about ways Moffitt Cancer Center is promoting skin cancer prevention through community outreach programs.
Sincerely,
The Moffitt Cancer Center Team
Skin Cancer Knows No Limits
If caught early, melanoma, a form of skin cancer, is almost always curable.
When not detected early enough, however, melanoma is one of the toughest forms of cancer to treat. Physicians in Moffitt’s Cutaneous Oncology Program specialize in the evaluation and treatment of patients with cancers of the skin – melanoma, basal and squamous cell carcinoma, Merkel cell carcinoma, dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans and other skin tumors.

Moffitt Patient/Family Testimonial
Betty Crump, a resident of Anderson, S.C., describes how troubling symptoms and gradual debilitation continued over several years. After seeing 27 doctors in three states and receiving multiple misdiagnoses, Crump finally made her way to a facility in Florida that specialized in spine problems. By this time she was experiencing falls, leading to broken bones and paralysis.
She was diagnosed as having a benign tumor that was pressing on the top of her spinal cord, restricting the flow of spinal fluid. She was referred to Frank Vrionis, M.D., Ph.D., a Moffitt neurosurgeon, who performed the surgery. Two weeks after she returned home she was able to move around without using a walker.
“It was meant for me to meet the people who took care of me at Moffitt,” says Betty Crump.”
