Welcome To The January/February 2010 Issue
While many of us may give little thought to the body's endocrine system, this system of glands secretes hormones, chemical messengers from one cell to another, affecting cells within various organs. Moffitt Cancer Center surgeons are using breakthrough technology to treat tumors that are especially challenging to remove.
Sincerely,
The Moffitt Cancer Center Team
Robotic-Assisted Surgery Performed On Rare Endocrine Tumor
The body's endocrine system affects just about every function of the body, from mood and growth to metabolism and reproductive processes. Endocrine tumors can throw the body's system out of kilter and cause long-term physiologic problems. Read how a Moffitt surgeon is using robotic-assisted surgery to remove a rare - and difficult to treat - endocrine tumor called pheochromocytoma.

Moffitt Patient/Family Testimonial
Kathleen Wozniak tries to not let little things get her upset – “Those little things in life, I try to let it go,” the Sarasota resident said, after undergoing robotic-assisted adrenal gland surgery at Moffitt.
Before the successful surgery, however, she battled fatigue, headaches and changes in hormones. “Mentally, I would want to do things, but I was so tired I could not do anything,” she said, describing her frustrating condition.
Her persistence led her to Moffitt Cancer Center where W. Bradford Carter, M.D., program leader of Moffitt’s Endocrine Tumor Program, handled her treatment for the rare tumor, a pheochromocytoma. Although not cancerous, the tumor was dangerous because it was causing her body to produce too much of certain hormones that regulate heart rate and blood pressure.
